Digital Right to Work Checks

A digital right to work check is a core requirement of the onboarding process for new employees to ensure they have the correct documentation to legally work in the UK. These rules apply to all businesses in the UK regardless of size and the requirement is to verify employees have the right to work in the UK prior to starting their employment.

The UK government has stated that UK employers need to conduct these checks in one of the following ways:

• Manuel in person right to work check
• Right to work check using Identification document validation technology
• Home office online right to work check

From 1^st October 2022, UK businesses are no longer able to use the Covid-adjusted right to work check introduced by the UK Government during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This allowed applicants to show their passport details on a video call to prove their eligibility to work in the UK. You must return to completing right to work checks in person with your applicants or use the services of a Digital identity service provider (IDSP).

What is a Digital identity service provider (IDSP).

A digital identity service provider can digitally verify the identity of an applicant using Identification document validation technology. This route is only available to applicants that hold a British and Irish valid Passport or Irish Identity card.
