What Is A BPSS Check?

The BPSS screening process involves 4 verification procedures, often referred to as RICE.

  • Right To Work
    This check validates an individual’s nationality and immigration status as well as
    verifying their right to take up the position.
  • Identity
    An electronic identity check that verifies an individual’s name, address, any aliases
    they may have had, and any accounts and links associated with them.
  • Criminal Records
    A DBS check (Disclosure & Barring Service) screens for any unspent convictions on
    an individual’s record.
  • Employment History
    Verification of an individual’s employment history covering a minimum period of 3
    years.

Requirements and Recommended Roles in BPSS Screenings

Further to these checks, individuals are required to disclose any periods of 6 months or more spent in a foreign country during the previous 3 years in compliance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.

Although the burden of BPSS screening checks typically falls on HR departments, government guidelines advise that, where possible, HR departments should conduct BPSS screenings with the involvement of security services and legal advisors.
