The government is consulting on the idea that employers should be required to provide, as a minimum, basic employee references – for example, confirming that they worked for that employer and the dates of their employment – for any former employee.
There is currently no statutory obligation for employers to provide an employment reference. With the exception of certain regulated sectors, such as SMCR it is a matter for individual employers whether to provide employment references.
